Class of 1951 holds 65th reunion

On Friday, Sept. 16, the Honesdale High School Class of 1951 held its 65th class reunion at The Central House in Beach Lake.

Twenty-four class members and 13 guests enjoyed a fellowship hour at noon, followed by a delectable dinner at 1:30 prepared and served by Fred Thumann and staff.

A time of reflection and a moment of silence was observed in honor of the longtime reunion committee chairman Bruce Mackle, who died very unexpectedly on July 5.

Chairman George Piercy remembered Bruce as a great friend to all, a community leader, a mentor, one truly dedicated to planning the annual class reunion, always helping others and one who loved and lived his life with great enthusiasm.

Piercy dedicated the 65th reunion to Bruce’s memory.

Chairman Piercy then led the Pledge of Allegiance, after which the group sang a rousing rendition of “God Bless America.”

Following the invocation, dinner was enjoyed by all.

Following the meal, additional matters of class business were handled. Another moment of silence marked the 2016 passing of two additional class members: Evellyn Bennett Swartz and Zelma Oakley Johannes.

Letters received from Ron Spangenberg and Carole Taylor, both unable to attend, were read.

Piercy mentioned receiving phone calls from Catherine Park Greenham, Norman Lambert and Richard Holloway, also unable to attend.

He noted that several classmates residing in California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland and New York were in attendance.

Everyone enjoyed a time of fellowship, renewing acquaintances and catching up on life’s happenings, before heading for their homes.

Piercy acknowledged the hard work of the committee members, namely Mary Varcoe, Charlotte Davis, Ann Billard, Dottie Johannes and Dick Holloway for a job well done.
